General Foundation Program
Students are placed in the Pre-Intermediate (FENG-I) or Intermediate (FENG-II) level based on their Placement Test results. Students need to complete Intermediate level in order to be enrolled for a diploma programme. By the end of the course, the students will be able to use English more confidently with a wide range of vocabulary and grammar structures. Also, the students will have enhanced their skills in listening and will be able to communicate fluently. They will have developed their writing skills enabling them to write essays of different genres. They will also have acquired different reading skills, too.
The Mathematics component is designed to develop and enhance the cognitive skills required to meet the theoretical and practical needs of the Marine and Navigational Studies as well as Operational Technology and Port Shipping and Transport Management programs at Diploma and Degree level. Foundation Mathematics comprises of two modules, namely FMATH- I and FMATH-II. Successful completion of the learning outcomes of each module is needed to complete the Mathematics of GFP.
Information Technology (IT):
The Information Technology component of the GFP is composed of two levels, namely Computer Fundamentals 1 and Computer Fundamentals 2 (FCOMP-I and FCOMP-II). Semester 1 accommodates Level 1 and Level 2 is taught through Semester 2 of the Foundation Year. The objective of the course is that students gain the necessary skills to enable successful interaction in real life situations using Information Technology (IT) skills and equipment. The course contains both theoretical and practical components.
By the end of the course, students will have acquired a number of study skills and developed generic skills such as emotional intelligence, critical thinking and social interaction. It is expected that students will be able to apply these skills to all aspects of their education.
